Rooted in the Eastern Cape

"I am a perpetual servant of South Africa's rural people."Dr. Mpumelelo Sati

Dr. Mpumelelo Sati is a PhD agroecologist, a Chartered Director, a civil engineer and a qualified holistic planned grazing instructor and herdsman. For more than fifteen years he has worked alongside smallholder and communal livestock owners in the Eastern and Western Cape.

He was born on a farm on the banks of the Fish River, grew up in Makhanda and matriculated in Gqeberha. He has since worked across Amathole, Buffalo City, Chris Hani, the Cape Winelands and the Northern Cape.

His work sits underneath most rural programmes: how to restore the land, run a viable enterprise and sustain household livelihoods in the same decision. His doctoral research at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, It Takes a Commons: Decolonising South Africa's Eastern Cape with Agroecology, argues that without governance, tenure and voice, agroecology becomes a technique delivered to people who were never meant to own it.

A career that kept moving toward the land

Each step gave him a discipline he would need later: measuring, building, pricing, governing and, finally, farming.

  1. Measuring

He trained as a toolmaker at Ford in Gqeberha, then qualified as a Senior Mine Surveyor. Surveyors decide where a line goes and what it costs. He still thinks in coordinates, contours and consequences.

  2. Building

A BSc in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and an MPhil in Engineering for Sustainable Development from Cambridge. He went on to coordinate the design of Botswana's first commercial-scale mobile slaughterhouse for smallholder livestock owners.

  3. Pricing

An MBA from the UCT Graduate School of Business, then years of consulting for the World Bank, national government and companies including Sasol and Holcim. He led the agriculture sector of South Africa's national climate mitigation cost curves, and learned that a good idea without financial logic does not survive a finance committee.

  4. Governing

The Minister of Water and Sanitation appointed him Chairperson of the Overberg Water Board, and the Eastern Cape MEC appointed him Deputy Chairperson of the Eastern Cape Rural Development Agency. He has been a Chartered Director since 2019.

  5. Returning to the soil

A Kellogg fellowship at the Wisconsin School for Beginning Dairy and Livestock Farmers, where he qualified as a holistic planned grazing instructor and worked as a herdsman. Then a PhD in agroecology at Madison, conferred in 2025.
